Sometimes, I forget. Sometimes, I wake up and life hits me hard. And I allow it. I allow the stress of life to overwhelm me instead of choosing. Choosing what my eyes and ears will consume first. I don’t seem to learn very quickly. I pay. Today I paid. It was small. It became no big deal, but I got anxious and upset and then all of life got in my face and I got scared.
Wait a second.
The Bible was in front of me. The word of God,living and active, was waiting to pour out. Instead, here I am, checking social media, bank account, email. WHAT IS THAT. Ridiculous. For me. I had to set it all aside. I realize I am in really good company.
28 About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face ·changed [was altered], and his clothes ·became shining white [or flashed white like lightning]. 30 Then [L look; T behold] two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with Jesus. [C God had given the Law through Moses, and Elijah was an important prophet (see 9:8); together they signify that Jesus fulfills the OT.]31 They appeared in ·heavenly glory [L glory], talking about his departure [C Greek: exodos, perhaps recalling the Exodus from Egypt, and referring to Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension] which he ·would soon bring about [L was about to fulfill/accomplish] in Jerusalem. 32 [L Now; But] Peter and the others were ·very sleepy [L weighed down with sleep], but when they awoke fully, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men standing with him.
No, I’m not equating myself with Jesus, Moses or Elijah. Look:
32 [L Now; But] Peter and the others were ·very sleepy [L weighed down with sleep], but when they awoke fully, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men standing with him.
They fell asleep.
Right in front of their eyeballs the glory of Christ, Moses, Elijah standing around having a convo. And what are our disciples doing? Sleeping. Jesus had a chance to be poured INTO. He was spending all His time pouring out. Here was a time for Him to be loved, to be encouraged. His beloved? Yes, asleep.
So. Me.
I have the word of God sitting on my lap. And here I am on my damn phone. I have a chance to be poured INTO. To be loved, to be loved, to be encouraged…and I choose what? Social media. Even as I write this, my mouth turns a little dry and I want better for myself. I want to choose Him. Lest you think I am too hard on myself, I just know this. I want so much more Jesus in me. I’m not going for a checklist, or a should be or should have done. No. This is not berating myself.
I just am so Peter.
33 When Moses and Elijah were ·about to leave [L leaving him], Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three ·tents [shelters; shrines; tabernacles; Lev. 23:42]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” [C Perhaps Peter wanted to prolong their stay or to commemorate their visit.] (Peter did not ·know what he was talking about [L realize/know what he was saying].)
34 While he was saying these things, a cloud came and ·covered [overshadowed] them, and they became afraid as ·the cloud covered them [L they entered the cloud]. 35 [L And; Then] A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son [Ps. 2:7], ·whom I have chosen [or my Chosen One; Is. 42:1]. Listen to him [Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22]!” Luke 9
Racing around. The explanation in the Amplified version is gold.
[C Perhaps Peter wanted to prolong their stay or to commemorate their visit.] (Peter did not ·know what he was talking about [L realize/know what he was saying].)
Will we know? He was babbling. He woke up, don’t you think? Saw the Majesty of His Savior and went dumb. I do love how the Father saves Peter, I almost wonder if the Father was rolling His eyes. (That is TOTALLY my version.)
Do not forget. This is MY SON. Stop the babbling. Stop the work. Just listen. Learn from Him. I want to listen. I want to choose to listen this New Year. Choose. So, today, I make choices. I want to make choices to turn towards Him.
Choose.
Peace.
