Our teacher yesterday in church told the story of Abraham. It begins with Abraham believing God and God crediting it to him as righteousness. Then we went into some of the mistakes, failures, etc that are also a part of the story. Yet, we find in Galatians 3:6-9, and Romans 4:1-22, Abraham is still credited with righteousness.
Friends, this credit was not based upon his adherence to the Law. It was not based on his works. It was based on that first step A took. He believed God at his word. And every time the Lord called to him or spoke covenant, Abraham believed. It didn’t matter the direness of the request of God (thinking of the sacrifice of Isaac). He believed:
”By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.” He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.“
Hebrews 11:17-19 NASB1995
He did not know how God would do it,but A knew the promise God gave him concerning Isaac.
That speaks a better word to me today. I have trials and situations where I do not know how God will answer. What I see scares me and leads to nights like last night where I rolled around my bed fearful. I do know God’s promises over me. I am not saved based on my works (good or bad). I declared innocent by faith. Faith that was given to me by the blood and resurrection of Christ.I believed. And I do believe.
I want to remember this truth about Abraham. Every time my fears and feelings tell me that I need to figure out a way or say the right thing, I want to remind myself of the truth.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
