The night watches are some of my least favorite times of day. I try to reason with myself to the truth. To the light, but I am accused, exhausted, and hurting. These are the times when I look back over my life and think of my mistakes. My sin. I am reminded over and over of how I ruined everything.
Now, in the light of day, I can see the lies. I can see the truth, but at night? Night is hard. So this is my letter to myself of the night and what i can use against the lies.
First, I want to remember the adulteress in John 8. Here’s her story.
“Now the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in the center of the court, and they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women [to death]. So what do You say [to do with her—what is Your sentence]?” They said this to test Him, hoping that they would have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger. However, when they persisted in questioning Him, He straightened up and said, “He who is without [any] sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Then He stooped down again and started writing on the ground. They listened [to His reply], and they began to go out one by one, starting with the oldest ones, until He was left alone, with the woman [standing there before Him] in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She answered, “No one, Lord!” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go. From now on sin no more.”]”

This woman has been hauled in front of Jesus. Her sin exposed. Her life exposed, all so Jesus could be caught. This was a test. Jesus will have no part in this game. If I think that through, then, when I am allowing the accuser to shame me. Jesus writes for me as well.
“The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.”
John 8:7
Jesus does not condemn me. He is with me. He is for me. He has won the battle for me. For you.
“When I remember You on my bed, I meditate and thoughtfully focus on You in the night watches, For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings [where I am always protected] I sing for joy. My soul [my life, my very self] clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.”
Psalms 63:6-8 AMP

Oh soul, remember the Lord. Meditate and focus your mind on HIS word. Not your own. Not your accuser. Our God has always been our help. Under his wing, I take refuge. I can even sing. And so I cling to you. I cling to your truth. You uphold me.
“I rise before dawn and cry [in prayer] for help; I wait for Your word. My eyes anticipate the night watches and I awake before the call of the watchman, That I may meditate on Your word. Hear my voice according to Your [steadfast] lovingkindness; O Lord, renew and refresh me according to Your ordinances.”
Psalms 119:147-149 AMP

You are my help. I wait for your word. Lord, may you transform the night for me. Help me know your word more intimately. Your lovingkindness..covenant word. Always with me. Refresh me.
“It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery [which you once removed].”
Galatians 5:1 AMP

This freedom. We are children of the free woman. We are children of freedom. Christ did it. He set us free.. Thank you, Jesus. “If I should speak, let it be of the grace that is greater than all my sin. When justice is served, and mercy wins. the kindness of Jesus. Oh, to tell you my story is to tell of him. “ My Story, Big Daddy Weave.
