John 14 is one of those clear examples of a poor chapter break. We always look at the first verse of 14 with a deep breath of awe. And we should! I love it, but don’t forget that Jesus has just told Peter that he will betray three times him before the rooster crows. AND by the way, HE was going to die. But don’t let your hearts be troubled. Oh, and Judas has been a big, fat liar this whole time and betrayed us all. But don’t let your hearts be troubled.
Put your whole confidence in and be persuaded in and believe and trust in ME. ( Well, not me..) This isn’t the end. Read with me. In my Father’s house, there are many mansions. Jesus goes to prepare places ahead of us. He will come back to gather His own to Himself. You know the way.
Thomas. Bless him. He questions. So much of the past three years explode inside his head. The reason Thomas knows the way is because he is talking to the only way to the Father at that very moment. By knowing Jesus, Thomas and the other disciples have discovered the Father. They didn’t know it and they didn’t realize it.
Philip jumps in for a swim. Show us the Father. He doesn’t understand. He isn’t grasping. Jesus makes it very clear. I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Trust. Believe. And bottom line? This is why we can truly say: do not let your hearts be troubled. I have so far to grow with that. Breath by breath, moment by moment. I have always loved these last supper chapters of John. Reading Jesus’ voice speaking is such a comfort. Do not let your heart be troubled. Put our focus on Him, on His word, on the truth. Amen? Amen.
