Working in a medical practice allows me to see people, not just as a diagnosis, but as a human who is worried and fretful about their life. Not many call or come in excited to be here. We are there for the points in their life that stretch their hope and pocketbook. My favorite call or conversation to have is to reassure a patient that, as of right now, you have nothing to worry about from our standpoint.
When a patient calls with concerns, my job is to ascertain, assess and ask questions to find out if this is serious. Questions about time, pain levels, new and emerging symptoms, ask them to send us a transmission for each piece of information allows the doctor to make a decision and determine a course of action. I have come to realize (even though the patient wants immediate feedback) that when the doctor moves fast, that means it is serious.
I’m in Matthew again today and in chapter 6. Let me share the verses and we will get going.
““This is why I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add a single cubit to his height by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Learn how the wildflowers of the field grow: they don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these! If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t He do much more for you — you of little faith? So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear? ’ For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This section in my Bible is titled, “The cure for anxiety.” If we think about this logically (hard when we are anxious and sad), Jesus has questions to help us reflect on the basics of life. Jesus begins with asking us to remember life is more than food or clothing, tho, when those two items are scarce, it is hard to focus on anything else.
Jesus asks that we remember the birds and the flowers. As you walk through y our day, I believe Jesus gave us two beautiful images to reminds us not to worry. Not to fret. In fact, I know that this visual has been life giving to this soul. As I walk each day, i am reminded: He feeds the birds. He clothes the flowers. He will take care of us.
So, maybe that is something you can do today. A beautiful image of a little sparrow or lily can be the impetus for you and I to recall His promises. They never fail. They are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness.
