Good morning, beloved,
Today, we remember. Today my family goes to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. My Grandpa and Grandma are buried there . He fought in WWII. My other Grandpa is not buried there yet we will pause and remember him as well today and service in WWII. A great well of emotion rises up as we drive into the beautiful grounds and our flag flies at half mast. There is a commonality as we pass families in the walkways, pathways, grasses…we meet each others eyes.
Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief].”
Selah, beloved. Pray for these families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Again, if you have children, the book, The Heart of a Shepherd is an excellent book for conversation starters on this very subject.
Diving back into Pentecost, 🙂
Let me give you some quick defintions of the Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread and First Fruits…by David Guzik..it’s critical to understanding..Pentecost..Quick. 🙂
The Lord’s Passover: Passover was meant to commemorate Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, and with the sacrifice of the lamb for each family, show how the blood of the lamb averted the judgment of God for each Israelite family. (Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples: the Last Supper..)
The Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord: The feast of unleavened bread was a week-long celebration the week immediately following Passover (from Nisan 15 to Nisan 21). This feast showed the purity Israel was to walk in (illustrated by eating only bread without leaven, a type of sin) after the blood-deliverance of Passover.
Then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest: The day following Passover’s Sabbath was a time to give the firstfruits of the harvest to God. The idea was to dedicate the first ripened stalks of grain to God, in anticipation of a greater harvest to come. (Jesus rose on the festival of the firstfruits 🙂)
“The firstfruits at Passover would be barley, which ripens in the warmer areas as early as March.” (Harris)
So, when I said yesterday: So seven weeks after Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits Feasts (or in our terms Easter)..that was not very right, I wanted to clarify. The italic comments are mine. 🙂
Okedoke. Now as to Pentecost, I’m going to give you the passage again in
Acts 2: And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place,
2 When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit [a]kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].
5 Now there were then residing in Jerusalem Jews, devout and God-fearing men from every country under heaven.
6 And when this sound was heard, the multitude came together and they were astonished and bewildered, because each one heard them [the apostles] speaking in his own [particular] dialect.
7 And they were beside themselves with amazement, saying, Are not all these who are talking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own (particular) dialect to which we were born?
9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and [the province of] Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and the transient residents from Rome, both Jews and the proselytes [to Judaism from other religions],
11 Cretans and Arabians too—we all hear them speaking in our own native tongues [and telling of] the mighty works of God!
So, first, take note of all the Jews that are in Jerusalem because of Pentecost! I love God’s timing! How amazing is our God, how glorious! Imagine this! (A side note, if you are looking for a tremendous Bible study this summer, spend it marking the Holy Spirit throughout the Book of Acts and all the He does…you will never be the same..)
I count fifteen countries represented.. although if my kids were up… Not only that, if does say in verse 5, every country under heaven…are in Jerusalem to witness the baptism of the Holy Spirit!
So now, I’ll leave more for later..I need to go work on the garden..:)Blessings and pray on.
