My mind is swirling this morning. I’m really supposed to be studying Acts. That’s where my Bible study has me. Or, in Matthew with the questions Jesus asks. Except today, I want to look towards the Scriptures and find questions the authors asks of God.
I’m not sure where in my history I thought it was wrong to question God. Or that the behavior of people always reflects the heart of God. I think it is very easy to look at God through the lens of fallible people. Decisions and action of people that affect us or dear ones profoundly can lead us to question God’s goodness, His will, and His character.
“While He was passing by, He noticed a man [who had been] blind from birth. His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed and illustrated in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world [giving guidance through My word and works].” When He had said this, He spat on the ground and made mud with His saliva, and He spread the mud [like an ointment] on the man’s eyes. And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.”

Who sinned? Where do we assess the blame for this man’s blindness? And as I study the word of God more and more, I’m finding that the questions I ask or the worries I face, are a direct result of timeline. I want life to be on my timeline. I want to no longer be in pain. Or I don’t want to worry about money. Or…you fill in the blank. And Jesus’ answer here tells a greater story than we can imagine. Our lives are meant to display the works of God and illustrate his glory. So much of this wrestling with the present day forget God’s hand in the entire timeline, not just the stitch I see before me.
Yet when we are in the thick of it and grieving, dealing with the fallout, reeling from the news, it’s hard to remember the greater story. We are in the pain. So, then I think of Psalms. That could be another study..the questions the Psalmists ask! One of my favorites is Psalm 94.
“Who will stand up for me against the evildoers? Who will take a stand for me against those who do wickedness? If the Lord had not been my help, I would soon have dwelt in [the land of] silence. If I say, “My foot has slipped,” Your compassion and lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up. When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight me. Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, One which frames and devises mischief by decree [under the sacred name of law]? They band themselves together against the life of the righteous And condemn the innocent to death. But the Lord has become my high tower and defense, And my God the rock of my refuge. He has turned back their own wickedness upon them And will destroy them by means of their own evil; The Lord our God will wipe them out.”
Psalms 94:16-23 AMP

When our foot is slipping, God is our rock. Coming back to what we know. Reminding our souls that the Lord is our help. His compassion, his lovingkindness holds our frames. When worry clouds my view, let us run to God for comfort. May it be our delight in the dark days. He is our high tower. He is our rock. He is our refuge. God will have the last word. Remind us, Lord, when the dark seems very dark. You are the light to our path.
