And His view of death..oh, mercy..I bet I just lost my only reader.
In my study this week, which was by no means exhaustive..I read over the book of John. First of all, the Greeks were like us in that they had a ton of words for death. Do you notice that about us as a culture? We say people passed, they are at rest, depart this life, To go to the big location in the sky, kick the bucket, etc., etc. So finding these mentions was “fun” at first, but I got used to it.
John 4:45-54 recounts the story of Jesus healing the official’s son from afar. He needed no touch, no sight..by word alone, He brought the son back from death. He had the power over death even then.
John 6:46-47 Jesus is the way to life eternal. He alone holds the key to our eternal security. Belief. In. Him. That He is the Son of God.
John 8:24 Jesus wanted no one to lose their life without knowing He was the way to life eternal. He was warning them. He was the way! He was the only way.
John 11 Here is some of the most amazing words recorded. I should say that as I reread this Scripture, I sat here in awe of His love for me. This is the story of Lazarus. He was very sick. So, the sisters were sending word! Jesus! Word up! (Well, they didn’t say that) The one you love is sick.
So why are these words that are love for me and quite possibly for you? Because when Jesus turned His face to Bethany and walked back to Lazarus, He knew that He was walking to His death. This miracle was sealing His fate. This was going to be His death. Yet His love for His dear friends, for His disciples who needed understanding and for all of us to come….
